Douglas Rimington, one of Lucire’s regular photographers, departs for Sydney on December 1—we pay tribute to him

NEW ZEALANDS loss is Australia’s gain as Douglas Rimington, one of Lucire’s regular photographers, boards a plane to Sydney, New South Wales tomorrow.

Doug’s first professional gig was for Lucire but that isn’t the only reason we’re doing a tribute to him online today.

He represents the growth of this title as a print magazine, first surfing in to the then-well trafficked Lucire forum in mid-2004. In other words, his career took off that year because of serendipity—a casual surf into a website was the catalyst to Doug reaching even further toward the stars.

Looking to discuss photography, he was invited—to his surprise—to attend a professional photographic shoot for Lucire in August that year. Since then, he’s never looked back.

As much as we’d like to take credit for Doug, his constant long and some would say ridiculous hours are what’s responsible for his career’s development.

Just as we’ve improved, Doug has gone from strength to strength, characterized by his generosity, humanity and professionalism.

From fashion shoots to some of the most luscious travelogues that we have published, we’ve been thrilled to see Doug’s work evolve over the last three years. When he comes just as a documentary photographer, we get regular requests for his work from the hosts of the events we cover. Usually, they are forced to admit, Doug’s shots surpass the official ones’ quality.

There’s almost universal admiration for his casual portraits, too.

He has covered both Australian and New York Fashion Weeks for this title, but has loved covering smaller fashion events around New Zealand, too.

The staff of Lucire wish Doug well for the next stage of his career. He will continue to collaborate with this title—a modelling competition shoot in Sydney is next—and we hope that we will grow his capability and influence in the years to come.

We expect to see him regarded as one of the world’s best, because he truly has what it takes. •
