A night in Bangkok

Custo Barcelona didn’t just wow the crowds in Spain—for the spring season it made a real impact in New York, says Kamitha Sloan

Custo Barcelona spring 2009’s anthology stunned audiences, as models walked down the runway in a presentation that was a gateway into the dance-techno scene of Bangkok, Thailand’s most vibrant city. In this context, Custo’s world was your oyster as pastel candy-coloured metallic, green apple, lavender, cyan, electric blue and fluorescent pastels shimmied off woven jacquards, silks and georgettes. This created an effect of obfuscated coloured passage ways exuding mystery and allure, just as the city itself.
   Men were ready to tumble and play a match of skill and wits, with their queens by their side. Showing at this parlour was no ordinary spectacle as vintage English motifs were the knights in this game, battling their chance for the ultimate pearl. Button-down polos, ties and bow-ties in array of hues, patterns, and stripes worn with eye-popping jackets, showed with shorts and pants set the pace. Beautiful beauties came strolling out of their temples in sheer kimono-oversized and embellished polo shirts that transformed into dresses and skirts that bloomed into an ocean of violets, suggestive of Paris in spring.
   Barely a minute later, the Custo ultrajean made its début. This was nothing short of sheer ecstasy, with unexpected street wear fabrics in different skinny and wide styles worn with jackets and Mediterranean and Philippine motif tunic three-quarter-length sleeve shirts. Soon after that, a little flesh made some history, when tea girls entered the runway in the beachwear collection. We all knew that these angels were the goddesses of the night. Caftans, pareos, tunic suits with matching baby doll skirts and halter dresses were the golden abbey of the show.
   We were fit to be Thaied! Every move among the purest, their fashion board was the crème de la crème into this season’s magical city. We were all checkmated! •
