At the circus There’s quality tailoring from Mondegreen this season

Runaway circus

Sopheak Seng is impressed with Mondegreen’s autumn–winter 2013 collection, with a new twist on what the label is already known for

The allure and romance of running away and joining a travelling circus is brought to life this season thanks to Mondegreen.

The dazzling lights, sequins, feathers and showman pageantry are all present in this collection, where you are the fashion ringmaster and the clothes are your tools to showcase the unique attraction that is you.

This season, as always, Mondegreen has specially designed a floral print, with a unique kaleidoscope pattern background and floral overlay. The print appears on everything from beautiful structured pants and cosy sweatshirts to silk shirt dresses.

Since the label’s first collection, the Mondegreen label has been about easy-wearing, comfortable glamorous clothes, but this season, a new attraction is added to the mix, with the label’s focus on formal tailoring, perfect for the office or evening occasions. Tailored tuxedo jackets and structured shorts speak of boardroom leadership when paired with one of the collection’s crisp white shirts, or, for the more fashion-adventurous amongst us, go nude for a bit of Saint Laurent Le Smoking for night-time.

Soft, luxurious knitwear is a winter must and this season the label doesn’t disappoint. Super-soft merino and cashmere mix cardigans and jumpers can be found to bring comfort for weekend wearing, or you can bring out the inner showgirl and temptress in one of the winter’s metallic jacquard pieces.

With a fairly neutral colour palette of inky blacks, deep charcoals and crisp whites, the injection of deep maroon, gold and cherry red sees this collection pop.

Stand-outs from the collection would be the Crowd-pleaser pants, with their very on-trend use of print and colour blocking—the relaxed tailored pant is cut to give you comfort whether it be dressed up or down; and the Dazzle dress, a classic leopard print in jacquard paired with a merino knit back, making this one perfect for the office with tights, or bare-legged for a night out and cocktails. For a more casual look, you can’t go past the Daredevil sweater, the special silk-printed front, mixed with its easy-wear merino jersey knit, is perfect for dressing up those weekend moments.

Mondegreen’s dedication to continue to design fashion-forward, affordable clothing for consumers, while still making their product here in New Zealand, is seeing this young label gain traction. It has an ever-growing customer base that eagerly anticipates each new collection and this should hold them well in the future.
