Actress Charlie Brooks (Janine Butcher in Eastenders) is lending her support to the National Centre for Domestic Violence in the UK. Although not a victim of domestic violence herself, Charlie feels strongly about the subject. She wants to help lift the lid on a taboo issue and raising awareness of the services offered by the Centre.
‘The National Centre for Domestic Violence approached me to be an ambassador for the charity,’ says Brooks. ‘I was overwhelmed by the speed at which they can obtain court injunctions and offer help to those who are in a desperate situation.’
The Centre’s release reveals that one in four women and one in six men will be victims of domestic violence in the UK. The Metropolitan Police receives one 999 domestic violence-related call per minute.
