Hermione Flynn is in the pursuit of creating intellectual fashion—garments which have the same artistic and intellectual integrity as a piece of art may.
Her début womenswear collection, The Gentle Woman (shot here by Sarah Burton), was initially inspired by the concept of gay marriage—more specifically a men’s æsthetic placed on an event which is so innately female in design.
The collection is about playing with menswear techniques on the female form. Uses of colour blocking, geometric shapes and traditional tailoring combine to create garments that are feminine and flattering to the figure while playing with the idea of gender identity.
Having been influenced by great couturiers like the late Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan and John Galliano, Flynn was lucky enough to follow in their footsteps, attending a course at the renowned Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London. Hermione Flynn is a label that all should be keeping an eye on.
Flynn’s début collection has been selected as one of ten semi-finalists to compete as part of the inaugural Westpac Young Fashion Designer Competition.
As part of the competition, the public is asked to vote via the official Facebook page for whom they wish to see compete for a place in the highly anticipated walk-off on at New Zealand Fashion Week.
The competition is an amazing opportunity to discover what the next generation of designers will be doing in years to come. Flynn’s designs compete alongside those of Sophie Burrowes, Phillip & Alice, and Roxanna Zamani. Help support local talent by going online and voting.—Sopheak Seng
