Sakaguchi to show at Christchurch earthquake appeal during NZFW

August 23, 2011/23.46

On February 22, Christchurch-based designer Sakaguchi was forced to close the doors of his flagship store in Merivale, Christchurch. Unfortunately, on June 13, the store suffered extensive damage and had to be demolished.
Despite the unfortunate series of events, said Sakaguchi of the support from the community, ‘We received fantastic support from our very loyal local and Australian stockists with existing clients holding back on budgets and rescheduling appointment times; this has been very encouraging and has enabled us to continue.’
Despite all the disruption to the brand as well as tough economic times, Sakaguchi has managed to not only increase local and offshore accounts, but also pick up new accounts. New Zealand Fashion Week organizer, Pieter Stewart, and Christchurch charity event organizer, Angela Stone, have invited Sakaguchi, along with five other Christchurch designers and local models, to be a party to the Canterbury charity designer show during New Zealand Fashion Week.
The appeal show will help to raise awareness of the help that Christchurch will continue to require as it rebuilds, but will also encourage people to purchase the designs of local Christchurch designers, thereby helping them to re-engage with not only the public but also the fashion industry.
The show will have an optional NZ$5 donation which will be collected before being seated, and will be donated to the Red Cross Earthquake Appeal.—Sabine Ernest
