Kanye West débuts collection at Paris Fashion Week

News

October 3, 2011/23.13

Kanye West has shown at Paris Fashion Week, with a hot-ticket spring–summer 2012 show at the library of the Lycée Henri IV. As expected with a celebrity designer, other celebrities were invited: Lindsay Lohan, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, and Jared Leto, among others. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld also attended.
In terms of spectacle, West managed to hit the right notes, but fashion-wise, the rapper-turned-designer wasn’t quite tapping in to the Zeitgeist. It’s difficult to write about what West was trying to achieve, since he didn’t grant interviews leading up to the collection, and all we have to go on is his personal brand.
But what is that brand? For those uninitiated with the world of hip-hop, it’s unclear, and it seems unfair to judge West based solely on a stereotype of his genre of music. However, the collection itself showed what one might expect from that world: leather, lots of cleavage, bare backs, bandage and slashed dresses, tight jeans, and a lot of fur. Figure-hugging streetwear, sheer materials, and plenty of blacks, whites and golds suggest that the designs are not exactly on-trend, though from a marketing point-of-view, West should get his share of sales from his name alone. Certainly his fellow celebs loved it, and if a bit of the luvvie syndrome can help push a collection, he might get there.
