Interview: Anne Hathaway on playing Catwoman

Anne Hathaway has sat down with ITN for an interview about her role as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises.
Hathaway says she was aware of ‘the history and the level of fan expectation’ in following other actresses who have played Catwoman, including Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry.
‘I just trusted Chris [Nolan, the director] and I knew he wasn’t going to let me go out there and get egg on my face. His vision and Jonah Nolan, his brother’s, vision was so clear on the page that I felt really protected by the script. So, yes, there was pressure, but it was also mitigated by working with wonderful people.’
On her Catwoman being less “feline”, Hathaway says she never tried to make her portrayal ‘cat-like’. ‘It’s not really about that. She’s never actually referred to as “Catwoman”. She’s referred to as “the Cat”, and it’s something that someone else gives to her. It’s not she has an inner feline that I had to tap in to.’
Briefly, on Les Misérables, Hathaway calls her experience in singing ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ ‘so wonderful, very intense’.
