With Oprah Winfrey’s interview with Rihanna airing on Oprah’s Next Chapter on Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT in the US, Winfrey’s network OWN has released further footage.
Winfrey asks Rihanna about her being named by Esquire as the ‘sexiest woman alive’ and the ‘champion of carnal pop’. ‘I do not think about things like that. That’s not my goal,’ she says, adding that she did not consider it an achievement. However, she thought such an accolade was ‘cute’.
Rihanna also talks tearfully about former boyfriend Chris Brown, who had assaulted her. ‘I lost my best friend,’ she said. ‘Everything I knew switched in a night. I couldn’t control that. So I had to deal with that and that’s not easy for me to understand, interpret. And it’s not easy to interpret, not with the world watching. It’s hard for me to even pay attention to my mind and figuring things out.
‘It became a circus and I felt protective. I felt like the only person they hate right now is him. It was a weird, confusing space to be in because as angry as I was, as angry and hurt and betrayed, I just felt like he made that mistake because he needed help.
‘Who’s going to help him? Nobody’s going to say he needs help. Everybody’s going to say he’s a monster without looking at the source. I was more concerned about him.’
