The Royal New Zealand Ballet unveiled its 2013 programme, celebrating the group’s 60th anniversary, on Thursday evening.
Announced at Premier House, the Prime Minister’s official residence, the line-up was introduced by the Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage, the Hon Chris Finlayson.
There are three world premières in Made to Move. The first has been created by RNZB artistic director Ethan Stiefel: an original work set in a Bavarian beer hall (Stiefel jokingly referred to the New Zealand love of beer). Former RNZB dancer, now choreographer, Andrew Simmons, has created a follow-up to 2010’s A Song in the Dark; and Venezuelan choreographer Javier de Frutos will create a piece inspired by the Pacific.
For those who love classical ballets, Russell Kerr’s production of Swan Lake will be the RNZB’s centrepiece during its 60th anniversary celebrations. The TelstraClear season of Swan Lake opens in Wellington on July 18 at the St James Theatre. Tchaikovsky’s score will be played live by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in Wellington, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in Auckland, and the Southern Sinfonia in Dunedin.
Tower Tutus on Tour returns with a 46-centre tour of New Zealand, with highlights from Flower Festival at Genzano, Ihi FrENZy, Through to You and Don Quixote. Choreographers Brendan Bradshaw and Catherine Eddy have created a new version of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, narrated by Te Radar.
The Royal New Zealand Ballet’s international tour sees its upcoming production of Giselle, which débuts in New Zealand next month, tour China. Giselle, co-produced by Stiefel and the Royal Ballet’s Johan Kobborg, will tour Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Guangzhou and Suzhou.
At the announcement, RNZB managing director Andrea Skoog noted that the company was at an all-time high with sales. In a release, she added, ‘Already in 2012 we have connected with over 100,000 kiwis, with the highly anticipated TelstraClear season of Giselle still to come. I would like to thank all who have been with us on this stellar journey—especially our friends, funders and sponsors who enable us to take dance into communities throughout New Zealand.’
