Their Royal Highnesses Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso hosted the Sentebale Summer Party on Wednesday, marking the 10th anniversary of their commitment as patrons of the organization helping Lesotho’s children.
Prince Seeiso notes that he was inspired to work with Sentebale after the death of his parents. Referring to his own experience and that of Prince Harry’s loss of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, at a young age, he said, ‘It is a combined desire to carry on our mothers’ legacy of work that formed Sentebale.’
Prince Harry said, ‘At times the severity of severe poverty can be overwhelming. However it is through the dedication, passion and commitment of the Sentebale team, our community partners, local government, the children’s longing to learn, and you tonight that we are battling with these issues and giving these children a chance of a happier future.
‘We are providing herd boys with an education, specialist care and support to those living with disabilities, a home for children for whom no other support exists and psychosocial support for children living with HIV.’
A real example given by Prince Harry was that of a young girl called Mpolokeng, whom he met in 2004. Her mother later died of HIV, and Sentebale has since supported Mpolokeng. She is now receiving a secondary-school bursary.
‘This bursary only costs £250 a year,’ he said. ‘That really is a small price to pay to change a little girl’s life.’
Awards were presented to Malineo Motsephe, Relationships Manager and Mokhachane Lerotholi, Herd Boy Coordinator, on the Sentebale team.
The party was held at the Dorchester, Park Lane, in London.
Street magician Troy entertained during the drinks’ reception, while Joss Stone and Beverley Knight, MBE performed on stage later in the evening. Stone was announced as a Sentebale ambassador, and footage of her visit to Lesotho was shown at the event.
Guests included Sir David Brewer, HE Felleng Mamakeka Makeka, Prince Harry’s cousin Peter Phillips and his wife Autumn, ITV’s Tom Bradby, Laura Main, Kian Egan, Malcolm Borwich, Cathy Ferrier, Anne Aslett, Michael Wynne Parker, Neil Macdonald, Jodi Albert, Georges Dekeerle and his wife Ekaterina Neverova, Pierre Lagrange and Camilla Kerslake. Sponsors included Royal Salute Scotch Whisky, Getty Images, Garrard and Avios.
