A proper glance at Oscar gowns for Jennifer Lopez, Amanda Seyfried, Hilary Swank

We couldn’t let the day pass without showing you some of the Oscar gowns. These images are courtesy Giorgio Armani, who dressed many of the celebrities at the 82nd Academy Awards last night.

As previewed yesterday in Lucire, Jennifer Lopez’s Giorgio Armani Privé iridescent icy pale pink silk organza evening gown was much talked about by the public, especially on the Tweetstreams. ‘The dress features high-tech, futuristic fabric with a revealing front slit and a crescent-shaped bustier that cascades into a dramatic side train accented by Swarovski rock crystals. The mermaid silhouette gown is part of the 2010 Privé collection inspired by the romance and mystery of the moon,’ says the company.

Amanda Seyfried wore a Giorgio Armani Privé soft green silk strapless princess ball gown, again with high-tech materials. The gown has a geometric bustier encrusted with Swarovski crystals and a full skirt accented with mesh panel overlays.

Academy Award winner Hilary Swank attended the Vanity Fair party wearing a Giorgio Armani Privé black gown with Swarovski beading. Swank can get away with a plunging neckline without looking trashy, and continued her smouldering style with a cut-out back on this dress.

Celebrities at the Film Independent Spirit Awards

It’s easy to forget that the Oscars were not the only awards for the Hollywood set over the last few days. Last Friday, Film Independent had its 25th Spirit Awards, championing independent ﬁlm at an awards’ ceremony where the word Avatar was not uttered. (Interestingly, The Hurt Locker was in the running last year.)

Giorgio Armani previews Jennifer Lopez’s Oscar gown

Giorgio Armani has shown a drawing of the dress it has supplied for Jennifer Lopez at the 82nd Academy Awards tonight.
Lopez will present wearing a Giorgio Armani Privé iridescent icy pale pink silk organza evening gown, says the label. ‘The dress features high-tech, futuristic fabric with a revealing front slit and a crescent-shaped bustier that cascades into a dramatic side train accented by Swarovski rock crystals.’
Other celebrities that Armani is dressing include Amanda Seyfried, Hilary Swank, Eugenia Silva, George Clooney, Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker), Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds), Steve Martin, Samuel L. Jackson, Sean Penn, John Travolta, Robin Williams and Lawrence Bender (producer, Inglourious Basterds). Apolo Ohno, Adrien Brody, Cory Montieth, J. C. Chasez and Jordi Mollà will attend Oscar-night parties wearing clothing from the Armani labels.

Avril Lavigne’s label releases tie-in with Alice in Wonderland

The Abbey Dawn by Avril Lavigne label will roll out a limited-edition range of apparel to tie in with Disney’s Alice in Wonderland ﬁlm, directed by Tim Burton. Both the ﬁlm and the range début on March 5, with the clothing exclusively in Kohl’s stores across the US and on kohls.com.
Graphic Ts and denim form the core of the range, in line with Lavigne’s rock image. The White Rabbit’s watch and sayings such as ‘At least we love each other’ appear on Ts; the range also includes boyfriend jeans with suspenders and black jersey. Prices range from US$28 for the printed Ts to US$54 for denim.

Beyoncé launches her fashion line in to gaming

Nintendo knows how to engage the tech-savvy, as the idea of having an online fashion store as part of a gaming environment steadily becomes mainstream. Those who own its Style Savvy game for the DS can, as of March 1, access fashions from Deréon, the fashion line created by Beyoncé and her mother, Tina Knowles.
Players with internet access can choose from ﬁve real-life designs for the clientèle in the game. Below are an interview with Beyoncé and some behind-the-scenes footage.

Galeries Lafayette reveals Kate Moss for Longchamp space

On February 11, Kate Moss and Longchamp showcased their new collaboration at Galeries Lafayette Haussmann, Paris. On the same day, the company had done the same at Selfridges in London, with both stores featuring a modern, zebra-themed area in which customers can check out the bags close-up.
Paris shoppers can ﬁnd Longchamp located at the Mogador entrance of Galeries Lafayette. Large promotional graphics from the campaign adorn not only the exterior on Boulevard Haussmann, but down from the famous domed roof inside the store.
The launch of the Longchamp suite at Galeries Lafayette on the Grands Boulevards follows the January 27 announcement of the co-branded Kate Moss for Longchamp collaboration at the Ritz.
Moss herself had modelled for the brand before. This was her ﬁrst designer collaboration with the company.

Ken Robinson of Robinson Designer Goldsmith, New Zealand’s most innovative ﬁne jeweller and a long-time friend of Lucire, has been on a quest to get his gravity-defying designs in diamonds and precious gems into the hands and ensembles of top Hollywood talent. This journey led him to join forces with savvy event planner Anita Talbert (another friend of the Lucire family) for their dazzling precursor to Lozzi’s landmark Night of 100 Stars Oscar night viewing party at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
In some ways, our beloved Ken followed in the footsteps of fellow Kiwi Sir Peter Jackson, as he headlined this show and was a real-life Lord of the Rings, as well as earrings, pendants, necklaces, bracelets, and other stellar offerings—forged into rainbow hued skulls, whimsical animals, ﬂora, fauna and a few sparkling butterﬂies that looked as if they came right out of the mind of Mariah Carey (in fact, Ken had her in mind when designing those exquisite sparklers). He scored points with such luminaries as Natalie Cole, Jason Ritter, Lou Diamond Phillips, Charlene Tilton and others.
While Ken’s star shined bright in the land where Harry Winston once roamed the earth, other, others were on the rise, from LA-based Aussie couturière Kelly A. Swartz to the classic earthy gold and silver creations from Taber Studios, to art glass and silver treasures by Florida-based Accessoreez and casually dressy bling from i-Catcher by Vanessa Swarovski (granddaughter of Daniel Swarovski), to the supple Gucci-inspired bags from Cape Cod Leather (back from their triumphant appearance at the Distinctive Assets Grammy party), and swanky selection from our friend Charlie Lapson and vegan carry-alls from Montréal-based CherryBerry.
Anita also beckoned some other fabulous cast members, including stunning architectural eyewear from Italy’s Oberti (whose ofﬁces are Miami-based), sexy sportswear from Green Apple, Beach Bunny and Bejeweled, ShoeDazzle (Kim Kardashian’s new shoe-of-the-month club), Kathy Wilson Atelier’s modern formal wear and top European skin care lines Pevonia and Yonka. The cherry on top for this sweet affair was a cinematic Karaoke machine from Youstar, a fantastic personal green screen system sure to keep movie buffs entertained until the 2011 Academy Awards and their home version of Night of 100 Stars.—Elyse Glickman

From what we could tell, only two celebrities’ names were bandied about after the Love Ball last night: Natalia Vodianova, for being the face of the De Beers Magic Moment necklace, and Elizabeth Hurley, for wearing a see-through sari—recalling that 1994 moment when she wore a revealing Versace dress held together with safety pins. We have more news from several worldwide events. New York Fashion Week news tends to go to print, which is why we are a bit sparing online, though some info will head here. Doug Rimington has shot some lovely photographs for us from London, while Rola Saab will shortly report from Paris and Thomaz from Milano. And we expect to get extra news from De Beers for the Love Ball London, which is being held today.
By way of preview, the Love Ball is a charity event beneﬁting the Naked Heart Foundation. The event features an auction, where The Magic Moment Necklace, designed by model Natalia Vodianova and created by de Beers, will be offered alongside art from Marc Quinn, Anselm Reyle and others.
The Magic Moment Necklace’s central pendant features a 1·1 ct fancy intense pink heart-shaped diamond paired with a 3·06 ct white heart-shaped diamond and hand-set in delicate micropavé. The pendant dances on a chain of white gold studded with white, pink and yellow diamonds (totalling 1·81 ct, 1·65 ct and 1·94 ct respectively); part of the chain is detachable for versatility. The Magic Moment Necklace can be worn either as an intricate statement or a sophisticated pendant, says De Beers.
Says Vodianova in a release, ‘The Magic Moment Necklace was inspired by that precious instant when two people meet and immediately connect. Two stunning De Beers diamond hearts ﬁt perfectly together becoming one—symbolic of a great love. I was reminded of the famous love poem by Pushkin and of the ﬁrst playground we opened when I saw the children’s happiness and excitement. That was a magic moment I treasure and I instantly knew that the Naked Heart Foundation would be an integral part of me.’

Meet Antonia Marguerite, a San Francisco-bred designer who, upon meeting, will have you sweetly inspired just from her eclectic exterior. She describes her sartorial style as rock ’n’ roll meets “vintage junkie”, wearing high-waisted skinny jeans, an oversized top, and old costumed jewels draped on her neck. She hasn’t been on Project Runway (yet), but she’s already running her way to the red carpet. A true believer that hard work does pay off, Marguerite recently jetted off to Los Angeles to live in the land of the seen and be seen. What else was an aspiring Hollywood designer to do?
Marguerite attended the Art Institute of California—San Francisco, dedicating time to develop her fashion style and technique. During her Bay Area experience, she participated in San Francisco Fashion Week, which allowed her to create mini collections as a local talent. After graduating art school in SF, she moved to LA to obtain her bachelor’s degree in fashion design.
I was taken by Marguerite’s modesty when asked to talk about her most recent creations. She’s already dressed Katrina Graham from the TV series The Vampire Diaries, America’s Next Top Model’s Brittany Markert, and Ambre Lake from VH1’s hit show Rock of Love, just to name a few.
Her designs reveal a skilled mind; every piece made is clearly the subject of a character inspired by Marguerite herself. The clothing is like reading your favourite book. In one wear your body inhales the vision and setting for the ﬁrst chapter. With each step that you take, you become engrossed in the seams that turn page by page.
Marguerite’s garments not only tell a story but take you into a fantasy world of whimsical stitches. I think it’s the way she uses the human body and how the design marries to her initial concept of capturing her clients’ needs. She takes the body and divides it into layers with fabric so that each layer has a unique æsthetic. Afterward, the fabric is cut and shaped, creating a piece to be remembered. The tale ends with you completely satisﬁed and immediately wanting the next edition.
What are people wearing as they walk down the streets? Well, if they’re about to transform themselves into avant-garde splendour, in the streets of SF or LA, they could be wearing Antonia Marguerite.
‘Design-wise, I’m haute couture, dark rock royalty. Since, I can’t be a rock star, I want to dress them,’ says Marguerite. Although these garments aren’t for the ordinary person, anyone can order custom-made pieces.
So, what’s next for this progressive designer? Maybe it’s the theatre or music videos but, for now, she’s focusing on her next collection and various editorial photo shoots. At the moment, Marguerite is working on a collection, which just might have you saying, ‘That’s Gaga worthy!’

Martin Scorsese to direct Chanel ads, starring Gaspard Ulliel

Martin Scorsese must be in the fashion Zeitgeist. After appearing in news about Giorgio Armani and its support for his ﬁlm Shutter Island, we have received word that the Academy Award-winning director will direct the broadcast advertising campaign for Chanel’s new men’s fragrance. The campaign will star French actor Gaspard Ulliel.
The campaign breaks worldwide in August 2010.
Ulliel is probably best known to international audiences for his title role in Hannibal Rising. He has appeared on the cover of Vogue Paris (in January 2007) with Doutzen Kroes. He is also a face for Longchamp and has appeared with Kate Moss in that company’s campaigns.

Queensland Art Gallery to present Hats: an Anthology by Stephen Jones

The Queensland Art Gallery will present an exclusive-to-Australia exhibition, Hats: an Anthology by Stephen Jones, a collaboration between the Victoria & Albert Museum and milliner Stephen Jones, from March 27 to June 27, 2010.
The exhibition features over 250 hats and headpieces. The Gallery notes there will be ‘a twelfth-century Egyptian fez, a wide-brimmed black silk tulle hat from Christian Dior’s ﬁrst collection in 1948, Mary Quant’s c. 1968 navy blue béret, and Stephen Jones’s Wash and Go hat from spring 1993.
‘It also features hats worn by historical and cultural icons: Elsa Schiaparelli’s black felt beret worn by Marlene Dietrich in Witness for the Prosecution in 1957, Philip Treacy’s bridal headpiece created for Camilla Parker-Bowles’s marriage to the Prince of Wales in 2005, and Jones’s own creations such as Mick Jagger’s hat worn for the Rolling Stones’ A Bigger Bang World Tour and Kylie Minogue’s visor headdress on her Showgirl tour.’

Giorgio Armani has dressed Martin Scorsese and Leonardo di Caprio for the première of Shutter Island at the Berlinale, the 60th Berlin International Film Festival, the company has announced.
The company is a key sponsor of the New York première of the movie, with Armani’s niece, Roberta Armani, attending.
The cocktail party for the New York première on the 16th is to be held at Armani Ristorante, within Armani Fifth Avenue.

Alexander McQueen commits suicide on eve of mother’s funeral

Designer Lee McQueen, better known by his label’s name of Alexander McQueen, has been found dead at his home, a victim of suicide.
McQueen, 40, had found it difﬁcult to come to terms with his mother’s passing on February 2. Her funeral was scheduled to take place tomorrow.
His Twitter postings reﬂected his sombre mood after his February 3 announcement of his mother’s death.
He was found hanged at his ﬂat in Mayfair around 10.20 a.m. GMT today (February 11).
The Metropolitan Police has said in a statement that McQueen’s death is not being treated as suspicious.
His body was taken away from the ﬂat before 5 p.m. GMT.
His company’s website posted the message, ‘On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand, has been found dead at his home.
‘At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family.
‘Lee’s family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this.’
One of McQueen’s earliest supporters, the magazine editor Isabella Blow, had taken her own life three years ago.
The designer had come to most people’s attention after he succeeded John Galliano at Givenchy in 1996. He was later hired by the Gucci Group, joining the group in 2000. Gucci had bought a controlling stake in McQueen’s own label.
McQueen had planned for a spectacular collection at Paris Fashion Week later this season.

MAC unveils latest Viva Glam campaign, with Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper

MAC has unveiled its latest Viva Glam campaign, featuring Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper. Proceeds from the sale of its Viva Glam VII lipsticks will beneﬁt the MAC Aids Fund.
The spring 2010 edition sees two new lipstick shades, with a light coral red lustre bearing Lauper’s name and a light blue–pink lustre with Lady Gaga’s.
The collection hits counters on March 1, retailing at NZ$40.
The MAC Aids Fund will announce $2·5 million in new donations to fund model programmes that address the vulnerabilities and inequities that place women at increased risk for HIV and Aids, says the company.
To date, the MAC Aids Fund has already raised over $150 million to combat HIV and Aids.
‘I think it’s absolutely insane that some people have fewer rights than others, and I’m grateful that MAC has decided to focus on women while I’m a Viva Glam spokesperson. I have so much to say and so much to share, and I’m going to let my lips and lipstick do the talking!’ says Lauper in a release.
‘I’ve been familiar with the campaign and have been wearing MAC since I was 10 years old. To be joining the likes of iconic former Viva Glam spokespeople is an honour. My new Viva Glam lipstick colour is amazing. It’s very me—a bluish pink, great for every day, a little bit ’80s. I hope that women buy this lipstick, and honour themselves and honour the cause,’ says Lady Gaga.
