But for most people, the most memorable event
of the first day was a 007-themed party hosted by Giao at Amba Lounge.
And Giao has gotten to that hallowed realm where she is known by
a single word, rather than Giao Ngoc Tran. The label's reputation
and name has become that of the designerthink Valentino or
Halston but prettier and curvier.
We spotted some dinner suits but there were even
more remarkable cheongsams and oriental dress as guests re-enacted
Dr No and You Only Live Twice considerably Moore than
any Brosnan outing. Some of the Nick Servian photography of a naked
golden-lit figure, inspired by Goldfinger's opening title
designed by Robert Brownjohn, adorned Amba walls. It began rather
crowded despite VIPs arriving at 7·30 p.m., an hour earlier
than the public was permitted, but the night went on most brilliantly
as the music increased along with the dancing.
The DJ made some concession to the theme with
various arrangements of Normans The James Bond Theme
and Barts From Russia with Love but there wasn't
that much John Barry other than Goldfinger. Nor did
it really venture past that; the music simply got harder and less
Bondian as the night wore on.
