Lambton Room at the Inter-continental Wellington was full last Tuesday
night (September 24) as Ellen Mann débuted her summer 2003
Black Widow range. The evening’s proceeds went towards supporting
the New Zealand Cancer Society assisting with support and information
for cancer patients and their families, prevention and detection
and cancer research.
Cancer survivors are often left with a debilitated
sense of self-esteem after treatment that can seem daunting if they
are feeling uninspired about their appearance. Fashion and self-esteem
have long been partners, boosting each other in ways beyond affirmations
or other remedies, so Ellen’s choice of charity is a "big picture"
step towards helping women on the road to recovery.
The Black Widow range, inspired by the intricacies
of spider webs, was previewed to an enthusiastic, if somewhat uncouth
crowd. Obviously not rehearsed in the etiquette of catwalk shows,
the occasional badly timed outbreak of laughter from two tables
at the back ruined the mood and embarrassed the models. Regardless
of this, the four superb models were stylish and cut stunning figures
weaving their way around the room. They all showed the exquisite
garments to their best advantage. Each model had her own unique
appeal and this was reflected in the way she wore the clothes. Ellen
cleverly showed that her creations defy age, size and convention
by using the same garment on different models worn either in a different
colour or layered in a subtly new way.
Rich gold dupion silk opened the show in the form
of an exquisite softly tailored Black Widow jacket matched with
Tarsus trousers. The dupion silk coupled with black lace imitates
the Black Widow spider and her entangled web.
