Buying a new fur coat is a no-no in today's climate—so why not refurbish an old one? It's not for paupers—it’s good enough for Jennifer Lopez and Kate Moss, writes Ann Fryer

LD IS NEW AGAIN! The trend today is to take an old fur coat and give it a makeover, shearing it, shortening it, taking it in or changing the buttons. Have your mother's old coat from the ’80s with shoulder pads? No problem—join the celebrity set and have it retooled to suit your style.
Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, Kate Moss, Foxy Brown, Cher, Eve, Naomi Campbell (left) and Finola Hughes are just a few of the fur fashionistas walking the red carpet. They are not only buying new styles, they are revamping vintage coats as well.
Buying a vintage fur is a much more affordable option than purchasing a new coat and given that it's so easy to spiff a coat up—why not? The wearing of fur has resurged, but in today's economy not everyone can spend $15,000 on a coat.
And thus, the latest trend: taking an old coat to a fur doctor and getting something hip and new in return—for a fraction of the cost. Anne Dee Goldin, owner and designer of Goldin Feldman, a posh fur salon in New York City at 150 West 30th Street, regularly retools old coats for the fashion set.

Anne Dee Goldin is one of the best-known furriers in New York City and with her experience and reputation, she is a great person to visit to give your old coat a new look. In the past two decades, Goldin has worked with world-renowned couturiers such as Narciso Rodriguez, Anne Klein, Geoffrey Beene, Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld for Chloe.
‘I never considered myself a furrier—more of a fashion merchant who ended up in the fur industry,’ notes Goldin. Of course, having grown up in the fur business, Goldin is familiar with all aspects of designing, producing and selling fur. Since 1909, Goldin Feldman has set the standard for fur design and production. As a third generation fur merchant on both sides of her family, Anne Dee took over the family business from her father in 1990.
A year ago, Anne Dee created her own signature collection that was embraced by both the fashion and fur community alike. Chic, modern and beautiful, Goldin's première offered customers something more. From shearlings and reversible furs to luxurious mink and sable, Goldin's designs combined progressive technology with old-world craftsmanship while never sacrificing style.
So start digging though your attic for those old coats and have Anne Dee turn them into something new and fashionable! • Ann Fryer
