Reem Acra
REEM ACRA
is internationally known for her exquisite bridal wear designs,
which is sold to more than 200 of the most exclusive retailers in
the United States (Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus) and Europe,
not to mention being prominently profiled on the pages of numerous
magazine including InStyle, Town & Country, Vogue,
Women’s Wear Daily, W and a host of leading bridal
magazines throughout the world. On the urging of influential retailers,
she throw her hat into the eveningwear design field in 2000, and
now those designs are seen as must-have additions to the wardrobes
of Hollywood stars and some of the most influential women in the
country. Her design philosophy is one that embraces a love of luxurious
fabrics, deep textures, rich colour and ‘anything made by hand’.
She simultaneously approaches fashion as an even-handed mixture
of an appreciation for the ‘traditional and classic’ combined with
the ‘modern fashion needs of today’s stylish woman’. And she backs
this up with an underlying technical acumen, boundless creativity
and thoughtful attention to detail that has helped to greatly elevate
her craft and designs to new heights.
For fall 2004, her ‘Speakeasy’collection mixes
Louise Brooks (a major Hollywood star of the ’20s and ’30s) with
Gwen Stefani (a singer–actress who has emerged as a style icon of
the early-2000s) in a modern-day tribute to the roaring twenties.
Ms Acra takes us on a colourful journey where fluid shapes combined
with her signature embroidery and otherwise ethereal embellishments
were the foundation for a collection that was filled with unforced
easy style and graceful silhouettes. She opened with an antique
silver–burgundy chiffon chemise flapper dress, immediately setting
the tone. I loved her burgundy velvet blouson low waist dress with
beaded insets; her beaded grey chiffon dress with tulle hemline
detailing was just as lovely; and her gold embroidered organza swing
skirt dress (with discreet nude lining) was a stand-out design in
the early section of the show. For full-blown, red carpet dressing,
I would highly recommend her coral–gold embroidered black chiffon
chemise and her stunning antique gold tulle gown, to name just two.
Another standout design in this section would be her absolutely
beautiful copper tulle–lace gown. Ms Acra is blessed with knowing
when enough truly is enough, so every piece worked, first as wearable
art and secondly as clothing most any woman would heartily embrace
and add to their fall wardrobe.
