Chichi is a breezy, confident ode to Grace Kelly and the world of débutante balls

   The designer’s impeccably formal tailoring for that colonial feel had a hint of unabashed eastern opulence in the exquisite fabrics, many made or embroidered in India to the designer’s exacting specifications. But overall, this was a more wearable collection than in past years. There seemed less of an abstract artistic focus, more on commercial appeal.
   Organizers axed the Designer Début showcase this year. However, seven of the shows were by newcomers. And it was a week for emerging protégés. One was the début collection from Mélanie Lachapelle. Chichi is a breezy, confident ode to Grace Kelly and the world of débutante balls. There’s just enough structure to the dresses and skirt-and-top combinations.
