Lucire gift guide 2005

With Father’s Day not too far off, Phillip D. Johnson examines what’s stylish for Dad in our 2005 gift guide

1

Initial cap UCIRES Life/Style section in the print edition has plenty of gadgets that men and women love. With Father’s Day looming in the United States, we take a slightly more detailed look at gifts for Dad—ranging from the techy to the touchy.
Logitech's MX3100 Cordless Desktop Laser Mouse (2) offers an exceptional blend of performance, comfort, and style that redefines expectations. The MX1000 Laser Cordless Mouse—the world's first laser mouse—represents a new pinnacle of performance, boasting a complete array of sleek one-touch controls that provide true two-hand navigation capability.
The stylish, ultra-thin V500 Cordless Notebook Mouse (US$69·95) from Logitech is loaded with innovations: an expandable chassis, a touch-sensitive solid-state scrolling panel, and 2·4 GHz wireless technology, wrapped up in a sleek design. This product is designed for the mobile professional and a fast-growing notebook-PC segment. The mouse achieves a range of 30 ft.
The new USB 2·0 Swivel Flash Drive from Imation (3) is available in five capacities (from 128 Mbyte to 2 Gbyte), and is the latest tool in the businessman's arsenal to combat having to lug around heavy briefcases filled with paper documents and such. It is designed to be easy for road warriors who conduct business from the airport or hotel suites on the road, photographers who shoot and save on the fly and students who need a convenient way to store projects and class notes.
If your husband or father is a world traveller, give him a Blackberry 7290 (4) with quad support. With global communications at his fingertips, he will be able to stay in touch and reply to your emails, call you before your big test, access the web and other corporate data so he will always be caught up on his work and have quality time to hang out with you.
Smarthome Inc. (www.smarthome.com) offers thousands of male-oriented gadgets and home technology devices and we were particularly intrigued with the following.
The MP3 Watch (US$189·99, 5) is a 256 Mbyte player housed in a fully functioning water-resistant watch on a black leather wristband, allowing Dads to listen to music while on the go. Its built-in lithium ion battery recharges (in three to four hours) either via the included AC adapter or through a Mac or personal computer's USB port, and with USB 1·1 flash-memory data storage, the MP3–FM Player can even be used as a removable USB Flash disk.
With the DiskGO! 128 Mbyte USB Watch Drive (US$94·99, 6), Dad can take his pictures, presentations or MP3s with him. Password protected, the watch plugs into the USB port on a laptop or desktop for easy transfer and storage. The cable is hidden within the watchband, so when it is put away, it appears to be an ordinary wristwatch. The watch is also water resistant to 100 m and shockproof up to 15,000 V.
Just as its sleek, aerodynamic look harkens to the name, the new Memorex TravelDrive M-Flyer Flash Drive (7) soars to the top of the USB flash drive market with category-leading read speeds of up to 25 Mbyte per second and write speeds of up to 17 Mbyte per second, making it one of the fastest available. The scratch-resistant, stainless steel casing and elegant curves of M-Flyer reinforce the upscale image of this premium product. Memorex offers the TravelDrive M-Flyer with the industry's highest available storage capacities (up to 2 Gbyte) and M-Flyer is ideal for transferring all types of digital files from computer to computer—even from Mac to PC. The TravelDrive M-Flyer (US$89·99 for 512 Mbyte to US$249·99 for 2 Gbyte) is available online at www.amazon.com and at CompUSA electronic stores.
For those days when the stress becomes too much, the new i-Top Pro (US$14·99, 1) is just the right stress reliever. The i-Top Pro takes the fun to the next level with a host of new features including saveable, customized messages, a variety of entertaining sounds, two new, reflex-challenging games, plus updates on i-Top's four thrilling, fast-paced games. Designed to delight everyone—from kids ages six and up to busy business people seeking executive stress relief—i-Top Pro is equipped with a collapsible spindle for easy portability. This flying saucer-like top not only twirls its stuff and captivates with its dazzling LEDs, it challenges players to test their skill with some amazing head-spinning games.
