The fashionable result of Emily in Paris

Phone chains are the must-have accessory for the 2020s, and buying the ones from Emily Makare Broadmore’s Cantermelon means you’re supporting a social enterprise

Would we support our colleagues in independent publishing? Absolutely! Emily Makare Broadmore, founder of the Wellington Writers’ Studio, is the creator of Cantermelon phone chains. Not only are the chains fashionable, Cantermelon is a social enterprise that supports the independent literary annual Folly.

While visiting Europe in 2023, Makare Broadmore kept seeing what she thought were tiny, chic handbags on the streets of Paris.

After awkward enquiries in limited French, she soon realized these decorative strappy sautoir were actually resin cellphone chains, worn in lieu of a handbag. Worn cross-body or dangled from your wrist, allowing you to be hands-free.

Intrigued, she found her way to flagship Paris department store Galeries Lafayette where she purchased several of these phone accessories. She fell in love with them, and had an Emily in Paris-esque epiphany: what if phone chains could fund Folly, a publication by the Wellington Writers’ Studio for writers and non-writers alike who produce quality content that is fun, silly, a bit sexy and at times provocative?

Cantermelon phone chains are gorgeous, functional and unisex, and a great way to accessorize an outfit. Your phone can be worn like a cross-body phone bag, as a phone necklace, or around your wrist like a mini phone-wallet or phone-purse. A strap also makes carrying bigger phones less cumbersome. It also offers security, protection, and safety of your phone. And you’re hands-free!

Celebrities who have embraced the phone chain trend include Dua Lipa, Kendall Jenner, and Gigi Hadid.

The bespoke beaded chains are made in New Zealand and phone cases are included. Cantermelon ships internationally. •
