Jody Miller celebrates Black female entrepreneurs in fashion, beauty and well-being for Black History Month

We remember the struggles and the sacrifices. The pain and the perseverance. The dreams, the determination, and the demand for equality. The lives mercilessly lost and the lives dedicated to a dreams accomplishment and exaltation in both the public and private spheres.

Black History Month is an annual celebration of the achievements and history of Black Americans and their pivotal role in American history, culture, language, and society. Since 1976, every US president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.

For 2025, the theme for Black History Month is labour and contributions to the workforce. In honour of this, we highlight the Black American women entrepreneurs making their voices and visions seen and heard in the beauty, fashion and lifestyle spaces.

Choc by Cori Broadus

Website home page

Cori Broadus, the daughter of cultural icon Snoop Dogg, is stepping into the beauty industry with the launch of Choc, an empowering self-care brand created to celebrate authenticity, self-love, and individuality. Launching in February 2025, Choc promises to reshape the beauty conversation with products designed to highlight natural beauty for all skin tones, all while prioritizing clean, ethical practices.

The début collection includes a highly curated line-up of lip care essentials that are clean-certified, 100 per cent vegan, cruelty-free, and intentionally inclusive. The brand is rooted in Cori’s personal journey of embracing her natural beauty and aims to inspire a generation to move beyond outdated beauty standards.

‘When I was a little girl, my dad called me Choc because I was sweet and chocolate-coloured,’ says Broadus. ‘That nickname was a symbol of love and acceptance, and I’ve poured that same energy into Choc to create something that celebrates you just as you are. This isn’t just a beauty line—it’s a movement of self-love and self-expression.’ Visit www.chocfactory.com.

Miraco

Woman wearing jewellery

Founder Samira Baraki was born into an Ethiopian family and grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, where she navigated her identity as a first-generation American. While travelling abroad to İstanbul in 2022, Samira found a love for the pieces she purchased at a jewellery atelier. To her surprise upon her return to the US, the appraisal value of the new items far exceeded the threshold of what she paid. It was then she realized the opportunity she had to bring value and quality to the market in a way that provided inclusiveness. This revelation marked the inception of Miraco, a brand born out of her adoration for jewellery, appreciation for design, and aspiration to fill the void of genuine diversity in the market. SPIbelt

Man wearing SPIbelt

The big idea started in 2006 when founder Kim Overton went for a run and faced a problem familiar to runners—where to stash her keys. She tried her bra top but that was by no means comfortable. Frustrated but motivated, Kim purchased the materials for the initial prototype, and began creating an answer. Soon, Kim had assembled the first belt and quickly knew she was onto something. A few months and iterations later, she chose the name SPIbelt, which stands for small, personal item belt, then filed the first patent and trademark. SPIbelt officially launched at the Austin Marathon in February 2007. Now you can find them in over a thousand stores across the US and in over 40 countries. Even with its international success, its headquarters remain in Austin, Texas where SPIbelts are still handmade. Visit www.spibelt.com.
