We’re already big fans of Brandon Sun—he’s been behind the fur at J. Mendel and Oscar de la Renta before branching out into his own brand. His spring collection featured some fur, in trim and as tufts, but what we loved was the texture on his garments, whether in cashmere, tweed or silk crepe. There’ll be a more detailed look at Sun’s collection after the week is up.
Another favourite of ours, Tory Burch, showed on day six, too: going from floral prints on white to a tribal feel, thanks to jewellery and embroidery. We loved the feeling of travel in Burch’s collection, the journey expressed in the fabric and styling, while the shapes remained simple and wearable.
Osklen’s début at New York Fashion Week blended its native Brazil with California surfing: prints and dyeing that reflected the beach, palm trees and the sunset were complemented by bright red and marigold looks.
Badgley Mischka was inspired by the 1935 cinematic version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which the design duo, Mark Badgley and James Mischka, called ‘so ethereal, fantastical and sensuous.’ This was a flowing, romantic collection, set against a forest backdrop, with tulle, silk, Lurex and sequins.
Vera Wang’s Indian-inspired spring collection felt opulent, with lavish use of embroidery, sequins, beading, Chantilly lace, jacquard, and guipere. Streamlined silhouettes with a few nipped-in waists gave Wang’s spring collection a luxurious, red-carpet feel.
Jenny Packham, a favourite of the Duchess of Cambridge who was spotted wearing one of her designs a day before, went back to the 1960s. Black and white appeared on her catwalk, too, along with silver and yellow, and there was plenty of embellishment, which seems to be one of the season’s trends. Jewels, beads, crystals and sequins characterized this collection, and Packham appears to have tapped in to the mood.
Naeem Khan started with daywear in his spring 2013 collection, before bringing out the red-carpet evening creations halfway through the show. He, too, began with black and white, complementing them with marigold, blue, pink, red and magenta.
Candela’s Gabriela Perezutti went to her childhood for inspiration, using even her grandmother’s vintage clothing and reinterpreting it for spring–summer 2013. Perezutti wasn’t afraid to push the envelope, with her style coming from multiple directions, and actually pulling it off with a fun, enjoyable collection.
