A 30th anniversary is quite the milestone, and Trina Turk is celebrating hers with a capsule collection, Poolside Gossip.

Founded as a women’s contemporary line by Turk and her late husband Jonathan Skow, Trina Turk has evolved into a brand known for its bright colours and prints, extending well beyond women’s ready-to-wear. The Mr Turk menswear collection, accessories, swimwear, eyewear, and paper goods show how the brand has carved out a special niche of its own, bringing a sense of optimistic, Californian design.

The 30th anniversary capsule is no exception, inspired by Poolside Gossip, the Slim Aarons photograph shot at the Richard Neutra-designed Kaufmann House in Palm Springs in 1970. The 297 m² house itself was built in 1946 and is an iconic example of Californian modernist architecture. It was restored by an owner who bought it in the 1990s and sold in 2022 for just over US$13 million.

The fashions in the photo are just as iconic, representing an era that Lucire has referred to in numerous issues. Fashion in 1970 continued themes started in the 1960s, often with brighter colours, and took the trends to their zenith, before more garish departures and maximalism crept in to mark the start of a far less certain new decade. What Turk has done is taken the looks visible in the photograph, re-created them, and expanded on them as though they were a single collection—which she has ably delivered, including styles for men under her Mr Turk label.

Now available through her website, which marks the special anniversary looks on the collection page, one can find top and pant sets in yellow terrycloth and white scallop lace, a swingy lace dress, and a leafy green print.

‘It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 years, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with a nod to the Slim Aarons photo that was pinned to my bulletin board when I started Trina Turk back in 1995,’ said Turk.

As she celebrates her brand’s 30th anniversary, she has also ventured into the home design space in collaboration with Flor, Tesselle and Schumacher, using her signature motifs inspired by a 30-year archive.

The collection will be shown at the Marrakesh Country Club in Palm Desert, Calif. on February 22 during Modernism Week. The show and luncheon will be held at the Tom Scheerer-designed clubhouse, with live music, lunch and cocktails. Turk will also show her spring 2025 collection, which was inspired by 1970s tennis gear.
