All the more surprise, then, that Coralie Fargeat’s body horror didn’t take out top honours at the 97th Academy Awards, though admittedly this isn’t a genre that tends to take out the top gong.
Lead actress Demi Moore also lost out to Mikey Madison in the Palme d’Or-winning Anora, which netted director Sean Baker his prize, and which took out best picture. Baker also won for Anora’s original screenplay and its editing.
Perhaps predictably, Adrien Brody won best actor for The Brutalist.
The winning actors in supporting roles were Kieran Culkin for A Real Pain and Zoë Saldaña for Emilia Pérez.
Peter Straughan won for best adapted screenplay for Vatican drama Conclave.
Lol Crawley won the prize for best cinematography for The Brutalist and Paul Tazewell won best costume design for Wicked. The Brutalist also took home best original score for Daniel Blumberg. Best song was ‘El Mal’ from Emilia Pérez, music by Clément Ducol and Camille; lyric by Clément Ducol, Camille and Jacques Audiard.
Wicked won best production design, while Dune: Part Two won the sound honour. Dune: Part Two also won for best visual effects.
Flow was named the best animated feature film and I’m Not a Robot the best live-action short film. No Other Land won best documentary film, a timely win as it deals with the displacement of the Palestinian people. The Only Girl in the Orchestra won best documentary short film.
Brazil’s Ainda estou aqui (I’m Still Here) was named best international feature film.
The Substance did win its Oscar for make-up and hairstyling, for Pierre-Olivier Persin, Stéphanie Guillon and Marilyne Scarselli.
