The US government’s self-destructive triggering of a recession saw one casualty in the fashion business today: sustainable label Malaika New York is to close.
Designer Malaika Boysen Haaning called time on her label after nine years, citing both a ‘life-changing event’ and the 20 per cent tariff on all shipments from the EU to the US.
Haaning said the tariffs made the business’s continuation ‘financially impossible’.
Malaika New York was committed to zero waste (reaching 99 per cent) and minimizing environmental impact, with small collections, ingenious fabric cutting, and upcycled materials where possible. The brand was profiled in Lucire in 2020.
Haaning made her announcement on Instagram, and expressed her gratitude to her followers.
A closing-down sale begins this weekend, which Haaning says is the final chance to own a new Malaika New York piece.
