There are always multiple shoots in Lucire that are potential covers. In issue 48, we did a split run, partly as an experiment, with a conventional cover and a more creative cover. The latter was fashion editor Sopheak Seng’s choice. And he was absolutely right: the very unconventional close-up, where you could not even see the model’s full face, sold better and had more Instagram likes.
Issue 51 presented a similar issue—always a good “problem” to have. We had to choose, however, only one. And we went the more avant-garde route with a photo by Signe Vilstrup, modelled by Wiktoria Darda, styled by Panayiotis Panouklias, make-up by Dimitra Altani, hair by Gabriel Georgiou, and clothing by Dimitra Antonea.
In some respects, we were thinking of the April 1965 Harper’s Bazaar cover by Bea Feitler and Ruth Ansel featuring the Shrimp—Jean Shrimpton—photographed by Richard Avedon. There Ansel cut out a circular shape from pink Day-Glo paper and placed it over Shrimpton’s face. It was too experimental for readers at the time, but it has since become an iconic magazine cover.
We were showing a model’s head covered, though the concept was different. Inside, the shoot is called ‘Lumine ductus’, or led by light. The model, Wiktoria Darda, gradually becomes more liberated. Sixty years since the Harper’s Bazaar cover, it looks like people aren’t turned off by something unconventional now. Ansel and Feitler paved the way.
Issue 50 was arguably a bit light on the written word but heavy on stunning imagery. There are more articles here, including a wonderful travelogue of Botswana by guest writer Abbie Chubb. The emphasis, once again, is on global, as has been our philosophy from the early years. The magazine itself: a more indulgent, intelligent read with, we hope, stories to satisfy the fashionable, and images that photographers can appreciate.
As is said on Lucire 51’s retail page:
In this issue, a focus on creatives from around the world, with contributions from around the world. INF’s Kuo Wei celebrates his Taiwanese roots. Karen Hartman of Astor & Orion jewellery. Caitlin McEachran, the designer behind Seam New York. The designers of the 10th Modest Fashion Week in Abu Dhabi. An incredibly memorable shoot starring Gunita Stobe, photographed by Maria Magdalinou. Our cover shoot by Signe Vilstrup, and beautiful fashion and beauty editorials by returning photographers Eric Hason and Arturo Las Pinas, Jr. We give our autumn–winter 2025–6 preview, noting that fashion brands are stretching their creative muscles again. Abbie Chubb journeys to the soul of Botswana. Stanley Moss discovers the beauty of Rome. Elyse Glickman has 2025’s beauty trends at this year’s Expo West. Do nation brands affect fashion labels? Has the Festival de Cannes recovered post-Weinstein and after the COVID cancellation?
