But what Mr Volbracht intermittently
did right was to, throughout the presentation, show looks that were
fun, youthful, and skilfully made that served all his models well,
starting with his white–black dotted sequin embroidered slip dress
(with its black ostrich feather hem) and his white–black dotted
ostrich feather clutch coat over a sequinned skirt and black sweater.
The ostrich feather coat is very versatile in that both uptown and
downtown girls can wear it without losing face in their respective
enemy quarters. The serious evening pieces worked for the most part—particularly
Karolina Kurkova in an amber criss-cross halter with crystal embroidery
and Dianne DeWitt in a wine–multi two-piece floral embroidered taffeta
ball gown—except when he went overboard on slapping fur accents
where they didn’t belong.
Was this a total disaster? No, I saw shows that
were a lot worse. Next time he will really edit the pieces
down to a manageable batch—say, about 35 or 40 looks altogether,
please? I truly hope that he put more faith in his abilities and
put more of himself out there in the designs come September. As
fashion people, we may experts in the fine art of Schadenfreude
but I was really rooting for him to succeed and beat the sophomore
curse. Michael Volbracht is one person I am not willing to throw
to the lions just yet.
