Retail royalty

FASHION Royalty, international politicians, and celebrity—all have gravitated to Maharani of Jodhpur. Stanley Moss makes the introduction

For the seasoned India hand, a visit to Jodhpur always includes a final swoop through the vast salons of the Maharani warehouse located on the outskirts of town. Everybody goes there, Mick, Camilla, Angelica. They might be browsing the vast ground floor filled with literally everything in the world you could possibly imagine. They might be arranging to ship home handicrafts, a bedframe or antique door, a metal Ganesha, wood figurines or some wild ceramic object. But the real treasures reside underground in an expansive basement warren replete with room after room of pashmina and silk shawls and wraps, textiles, rugs, and outrageous attire, all accessibly priced. Nobody who has visited downstairs ever leaves Maharani with empty arms.

The other Maharani experience happens online, where visitors are certain to discover fashion accessories and items “inspired by” recognizable fashion names like Hermès, Etro, Armani, Bruno Cucinelli, and Loro Piana. These items don’t carry the actual labels, but could very well be overstocks or factory seconds which never quite made it to the branded stores. The discounts are extreme. For a current view, continually updated, see www.maharanishopping.com.

Maharani reliably ships internationally. You can score some excellent deals, even with the added freight, even with expedited delivery. Discounts abound. •
