IMG Fashion, Style Media and Penske Media Corporation presented the Style Awards in New York’s Lincoln Center this year, instead of its usual home in Los Angeles. It proved to be an exceptionally phenomenal way to kick off New York Fashion Week.
A day prior to the official start of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, the feeling of fashion already began to fill the air. On September 5, the Ninth Annual Style Awards was starlet-central with VIPs, celebrities, media and, of course, top designers in the industry coming together to celebrate fashion and the industry. It brought everyone under one roof and on to prime time broadcast on the Style Network on September 14. Jeannie Mai opened the show with her welcoming speech. Mai is a TV personality recognized as the host of Style Network’s How Do I Look?, where her expertise allows her to guide people to achieve confidence as well as poise. Chic celebrities were honoured for their influential work in the fashion world.
Celebrities walked the carpet with enthusiasm, smiling their way into the venue. Nicole Richie, Joe Zee, Simon Spurr, Allison Williams, Elettra Wiedermann and dozens of other familiar faces glimmered with glam. Stacey Bendet, the designer of Alice & Olivia, wore marvellous red roses in her hair created into a tiara-like design to match the rest of her ensemble. Carolina Herrera represented a peak in one’s personal fashion sense, wearing a black suit with details that highlighted her intricately creative approach. Her ensemble was perfectly cut at the waist, accentuating a feminine look. She wore a pair of diamond and amethyst earrings to add a dash of shine. Amy Adams glimmered wearing a Giambattista Valli Couture dress.
Shortly before each honoree made their way on stage to accept their Style Award designed by the prestigious crystal brand, Lalique, a short documentary introduced the public to each honoree’s talents.
The chic Katie Holmes made her first public appearance at the Style Awards since news of her divorce from Tom Cruise. She gave an eloquently brief monologue as she presented Herrera with Designer of the Year. The beautiful model, Iman, presented model Joan Smalls with Model of the Year. Rachael Taylor, appropriately dressed in Reed Krakoff’s designs, presented the designer with the award for Accessories’ Designer of the Year. A number of honorees continued to be welcomed on stage to accept their award followed by a concise speech: Prabal Gurung (Breakthrough Designer of the Year), Katharine McPhee (One to Watch [Female]), Ed Westwick (One to Watch [Male]), Christina Ehrlich (Celebrity Stylist of the Year), Andy Lecompte (Hairstylist of the Year), Henriq Lundqvist (Most Stylish Athlete), Jenn Rogien (TV Costume Designer of the Year), Virginia Young (Make-up Artist of the Year) and Sandy Powell (Film Costume Designer of the Year). They shared their emotions on stage as they proudly received their award. They were all fashionable and ready for lights, camera and action. Westwick looked great in Prada and Nicole Richie was one of a few celebrities on the red carpet to wear every girl’s must-have, an LBD with a deep plunging neckline designed by Anthony Vaccarello. McPhee, one of our favourites for years, added colour to the runway with her short patterned dress designed by Peter Pilotto. •
