HOLLYWOOD IS probably at its most glamorous in the lead-up to the Oscars. The 25th Film Independent Spirit Awards, produced by the same people behind the Los Angeles Film Festival, was held last Friday at the Nokia Theatre LA with the support of jeweller and watchmaker Piaget and Jameson Irish Whiskey. The idea: to champion independent films—so there was no Avatar in sight. (The Hurt Locker, incidentally, was in contention at the Spirit Awards last year as an independent film.)

Top honours went to Precious and Crazy Heart at the ceremony, MCed by Eddie Izzard. Ben Stiller was honorary chair.

Celebrities attending included Andy Garcia, Jeff Bridges, Taraji P. Henson, Tom Ford, Olivia Wilde, Emily Rossum, Helen Mirren, Mariah Carey, Mena Suvari, Rosario Dawson and Jodie Foster. •
