Sonia Rykiel pour H&M Parisian carnival The Sonia Rykiel pour H&M collaboration kicked off with a spectacular party at the Grand Palais.

Sonia Rykiel’s Parisian spectacle

Sonia Rykiel and H&M launched their collaboration with a spectacular party—a mini-carnival, in the words of Kate Bosworth—at the Grand Palais

AS PARTIES GO, it doesn’t get grander than this. Lucire has covered numerous dos whenever Hennes & Mauritz has launched a designer collaboration, and they have always been filled with celebrities and fashionistas. But no one has taken one of Paris’s glitziest locations—the Grand Palais—and turned it into a fantasy-land for 2,000 guests until Sonia Rykiel teamed up with the Swedish mass-market brand as its latest guest designer.

When Karl Lagerfeld designed for H&M, the collaborations were still finding their feet, but by the time they became a familiar, annual event, the companies have found ways to top the last one. Jimmy Choo was the most recent, as covered in Lucire last month, with a party high above the Sunset Strip, but Paris affords that extra glamour simply by being Paris.

It also helps that some of the great names are there anyway: guests to the function included Jean Paul Gaultier, who spent time chatting to Sonia Rykiel and daughter Nathalie, who now runs the label. Kate Bosworth, Eva Herzigova, Nadja Auermann, Micky Green, Aure Atika, Philippe and Jasmine Starck, Loulou de la Falaise, Haider Hackerman, Lucire feature alum Bai Ling, Ellen von Unwerth, Kezia Jones and Vahina Giocante were among the other guests, while Lily Cole was one of the notable models who appeared in the Sonia Rykiel pour H&M show.

A model of the Eiffel Tower made the night’s fun-fair particularly Parisian, as did a re-creation of the Arc de Triomphe.

And it isn’t even for a full collection such as Jimmy Choo’s: this presentation was in aid of promoting the Sonia Rykiel pour H&M lingerie collection, which hit 1,500 stores on December 5, and the knitwear, which arrives in c. 200 stores on February 20.

‘It was the most magical evening. Sonia Rykiel is so totally Parisian, the epitome of chic,’ said Margareta van den Bosch, H&M’s creative adviser. Bosworth called the event a ‘mini-carnival’, while Herzigova believed that Sonia Rykiel is so tied to Paris that the do could not have taken place anywhere else. •
