To celebrate the launch of her spring–summer 2011–12 collection, A Modern Ritual, designer Hermione Flynn staged things a little bit differently from normal designers. Then again, Flynn’s work has never followed tradition or the norm. In continuation of her more artistic approach, Flynn created a performance art piece to showcase her work, staged at Wellington’s Service Depot.
Where the collection explored the rituals and repetition of dressing and the exploration of the traditional three-piece suit, the performance art piece was a juxtaposition of that exploration. She tried to divide and define the structure versus organic nature. Models were dressed in plain gold linen suits hugged each other closely, then dribbled ink on to the suits, creating organic prints and markings. These markings later developed into scribbles in a Vivid pen, covering the garments. It was an unusual but delightful way of presenting clothes and gave the collection a unique point of view.
Flynn told Lucire that the garments could be sold as one-offs. A film presented on the night appears on her website, at www.hermioneflynn.com/content/20/default.aspx.—Sopheak Seng, Fashion & Beauty Editor
