Variety reports that Scarlett Johansson will not be eligible for the Golden Globes for her role in Her, which is released on January 10.
Johansson, who plays an electronic voice, ‘Samantha’, in the film, directed by Spike Jonze, is not seen on screen. The Academy Awards and Screen Actors’ Guild say she is eligible, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has decided otherwise.
The film is being released through Warner Bros. It stars Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore. Samantha, a Siri-like personal assistant, is his love interest.
Johansson has already taken the best actress prize at the Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma (Rome Film Festival) for her role in Her.
Andy Serkis, who, through CGI, played Gollum in The Lord of the Rings and Cæsar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, has been the subject of studio campaigns for their roles, but they have proved unsuccessful.
Johansson remains eligible for her role in Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Don Jon.
Golden Globe nominations will be announced on December 12.
