Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln leads the 2013 Oscar nominations, announced Thursday in Los Angeles, with 12, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis.
Ang Lee’s Life of Pi had 11 nominations, and Silver Linings Playbook and Les Misérables received eight each. Ben Affleck’s Argo, on the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis, managed seven nominations, and Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, on the campaign to execute Osama bin Laden, received five. Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained and Amour also received five each. Beasts of the Southern Wild has four nominations to its name. Among the nominations of these nine films are Best Film.
Silver Linings Playbook is the first film to receive nominations in all acting categories in 30 years (the last was Reds, in 1982), while Amour, which has already won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, is nominated in both the Best Foreign Film and Best Film categories.
Up for Best Actress are Emmanuelle Riva (Amour), the oldest nominee for the category at 85, and Quvenzhane Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild), the youngest at nine.
Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), Naomi Watts (The Impossible) and Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) are their competitors.
Competing against Day-Lewis for Best Actor are Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook), Hugh Jackman (Les Misérables), Joaquin Phoenix (The Master) and Denzel Washington (Flight).
Best Support Actor nominees are Christophe Waltz (Django Unchained), Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master), Robert de Niro (Silver Linings Playbook), Alan Arkin (Argo), and Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln). Best Supporting Actress nominees are Sally Field (Lincoln), Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables), Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook), Helen Hunt (The Sessions), and Amy Adams (The Master).
Among British films, the James Bond film Skyfall received five nominations, including Best Song for Adele and Paul Epworth. There were none for acting, despite Javier Bardem and Dame Judi Dench receiving Bafta nominations. The Pirates: Band of Misfits has been nominated for Best Animated Film.
Emma Stone and Seth MacFarlane, who himself earned a nomination for Best Song (‘Everybody Needs a Friend’ from Ted), humorously made the announcements.
The Oscars ceremony takes place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on February 24. MacFarlane will be MC.
