In the 2020s, this is bound to increase in demand: health and wellness retreats. And Bolognese luxury resort Palazzo di Varignana is doing just that, launching packages founded on the Acquaviva method created by renowned dietician and nutritionist Dr Annamaria Acquaviva.
Dr Acquaviva’s angle is that the human body needs to be in balance, and seeks to design holidays primarily focused on wellness, sustainability and longevity. She modifies menus, holistic activities, beauty treatments and ‘transformative’ experiences based on scientific evidence about their effectiveness.
Her method’s five pillars of health are nutrition, inner harmony and balance, physical activity, sleep and rest, and food and cosmetic integration.
Says Dr Acquaviva: ‘Our destiny does not only depend on our genetic heritage, but above all on our lifestyle: how and what we eat, how and how much we sleep, how we manage stress, how we cultivate emotions, how much exercise we do.

There are retreats with different focuses available: Detox, In-form, Slim, Deep Sleep, Golden Age, and La Dolce Vita. New for 2024 are Shine Your Beauty, New Man, Yoga and Pilates, and Sport and Fitness. Durations range from two nights for Detox, through to 14 nights for the longer versions of Slim and La Dolce Vita.
