The SUVs are continuing to come, because not everyone has fielded one yet, and people are still buying them. As predicted by some, Smart will build a production version of its Concept #5, unveiling it in Brisbane, Qld. on August 28. European sales begin in 2025.
The Smart #5 is the largest car to bear the brand, after appearing on microcars to a C-segment hatchback in earlier decades. Designed by Mercedes-Benz, the #5 is a mid-sized SUV, aimed at customers with an ‘active lifestyle,’ says Smart.
The production model will have the hallmarks of the concept, with a boxy appearance and a distinctive roofline. The car is said to combine Smart’s æsthetic with the functionality of a crossover.
Prototypes of the #5 have been taking on off-road and winter environments, including battery-charging.
