Above Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein (1751–1829): Goethe in der römischen Campagna, 1787. Oil on canvas, 1,610 × 1,975 mm, Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main. Acquired in 1878 as a gift by Baroness Salomon von Rothschild.

Te Papa will exhibit European Masters: 19th–20th Century Art from the Städel Museum from November 6 to February 27, with the support of Accor, Deutsche Bank, DHL Global Forwarding, Göthe-Institut and Siemens.
The exhibition features 96 works by 70 artists and has been curated by Felix Krämer of the Städel Museum of Frankfurt. It marks the first time that masterpieces from the Städel collection have toured outside Europe.
The artists include Renoir, Degas and Picasso, while movements covered include neo-classical, realist, impressionist, symbolist and expressionist. Ten of the works are by expressionist painter Max Beckmann.
The exhibition has been indemnified by the New Zealand Government, and was developed by the Städel Museum in partnership with Te Papa, the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia, and the Fondation de l’Hermitage, Lausanne, Switzerland.
