Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Jodie Foster and Woody Allen will be among the foreign celebrities heading to the Festival de Cannes for 2011, it has been announced at a news conference at le Grand Hotel in Paris.
Allen will open the Festival with his film, Midnight in Paris, starring Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams, and featuring a cameo from French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.
Francophone Foster—possibly one of the most admired American actresses in France—will be present to launch her film, The Beaver, starring Mel Gibson as a man who finds solace in a hand-puppet, which becomes his means of communication. Foster directs and plays Gibson’s screen wife.
Depp and Cruz will be in Cannes to open the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, On Stranger Tides, shot while Cruz was pregnant.
The Festival de Cannes begins on May 11. Prize contenders include Pedro Almodovar’s La piel que habito and Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Once Upon a Time in Anatolia.
Meanwhile, Sir Elton John will perform at the Tribeca Film Festival. It was already confirmed that the singer’s film, The Union, directed by Cameron Crowe, would open the festival and news of Sir Elton’s performance was announced as early as March.
The Union will première on April 20. The Festival runs from April 20 through May 1.
