Stolen Girlfriends’ Club has collaborated with self-taught artist and painter Ziggy Knuiman with two impactful and memorable shirts that can rightly be called works of art.
Stolen Girlfriends’ co-founder and creative director Marc Moore and Knuiman had both grown up in Whāingaroa (Raglan), a small beachside town in New Zealand’s Waikato district. In 2012, Knuiman did an internship at Stolen Girlfriends’ Club.
Since then he has established himself as an artist, exhibiting and curating his first group show in 2020, following up with a second in 2021, before moving to Auckland in 2022.
‘I’m a 24-year-old self-taught artist. I use acrylic paint and ink pens to create vibrant art that generally has a dark gothic undertone to it, often walking the line between confronting and playful while telling stories through characters’ facial expressions and the worlds that I create around them,’ said Knuiman.
Moore would see Knuiman’s work on Instagram and considered how it would work with a Stolen Girlfriends’ Club collection.
Two images, Tough Guy and The Blues, interested Moore, resulting in two limited-edition shirts in soft, draped viscose retailing at NZ$299 each. US singer–songwriter Teddy Swims has already been seen sporting the shirts.
The collaboration’s official release is November 26 at their Nuffield Street, Newmarket, Auckland store.
