While Lexus has had a large, luxury car with a hybrid powertrain out for a while, BMW has caught up with its new 7-series. The BMW ActiveHybrid technology features a synchronous electric motor, a lithium-ion battery, and the power electronics required for the high-voltage on-board network. There’s still a turbocharged V8 under the bonnet, producing 342 kW (465 hp) and 700 Nm (516 lb ft). And it can accelerate to 100 km/h in just 4·9 seconds. However, average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is only 9·4 l/100 km (29·1 mpg Imperial), with CO2 emissions are at 219 g/km.
Our video shows the new car in motion as well as remarks by Werner Bauer, head of the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 project.
