Nickelodeon’s August 10 party showcased celebrity-designed backpacks, currently being auctioned to help the Children’s Defense Fund in the US. The launch, at Macy’s Herald Square, New York City, saw celebrities such as Uma Thurman, Kelly Bensimon and Kelly Rutherford attend, while the backpacks themselves have been designed by LeBron James, Salma Hayek, Jessica Alba, Sheryl Crow, Heidi Klum, Eva Longoria Parker, Slash, Matthew McConaughey and Camilla Alves. The auction site is www.charitybuzz.com/auctions/dora.
Bridget Monro   It wasn’t the only illustration-related do that we attended. Massey University in Wellington showcased its illustration programme (with support from Format Print), along with winners of a competition to illustrate a story in the New Zealand School Journal. The winner was not chosen by the sponsor and Journal publisher, Learning Media, but by schoolchildren at Karori West Normal School, who selected Bridget Monro’s darker steampunk-style work. Adults that Lucire spoke to had previously thought the style too dark, as did Monro herself, but the kids’ opinion won the day.
The exhibit, Imagine That!, highlighted the talent that is coming out from the illustration department. Those studying illustration do so out of passion, as often the field’s heroes are unsung when compared with photographers and graphic designers.
