For the duration of L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival, we have kept a close eye on common threads running through the collections. You may have noticed them, too. So take stock, assess your wardrobe needs and get in-store to fill the gaps if you want to be on-trend this season.

Trench coat: as seen with Dion Lee, Dhini, Sass & Bide (left), Kuwaii, Gorman and Above. For men and women, often in lighter jersey fabrics, intended to be worn indoors as an alternative to a blazer. Opt for black, fawn or mustard.
One outfit, multiple prints: as seen with Lime Drop, Gorman, Karen Walker and Nevenka. This trend is a tough one to pull off, the trick is to keep a common theme running through your print choices, either sheer, small florals like at Karen Walker, or bold and nomad-inspired like at Gorman.
Shirting: as seen with Above, Alice McCall, Dion Lee (below right), Arnsdorf, Ojin Bai, Dhini, Karen Walker, Kuwaii, Lime Drop and Arthur Galan (below left). Virtually none of the womenswear collections were left shirtless. Button-downs were seen in crisp whites, vivid colours, prints, sheers, and laces.

Colour blocking and monochromatic: as seen with Arnsdorf (below left), Life with Bird, Karen Walker, Extinct, Yeojin Bai (above) and Ellery (below right). The shirt and trouser combo is a favourite when dressing this trend. Go bright top to bottom if you are brave or pare back the look with a neutral colour option.

There were fruity colours such as cherry, hot pink orange and yellow, as seen at Lisa Ho, Karen Walker, Jason Brunsdon and Carl Kapp; while neutrals were seen at Sass & Bide (below left), Life with Bird (below right), Alpha 60, Alice McCall, Arthur Galan and Bassike.

Polite dressing: as seen with Collette Dinnigan (left), Above, Arnsdorf, Ojin Bai and Kate Sylvester. Button your shirts right up to the collar, tuck yourself in to your high-waisted trousers (never jeans), to be on trend this season we must be modestly dressed. This means less bare flesh (although a veil of sheer fabric or lace will suffice) and dress like a lady.
Metallics: as seen in Toni Maticevsky (below left), House of Baulch, Bianca Spender (below), and Yeojin Bai. The message here, get shiny! Add sequins to your daytime outfits; even your super-casual running shorts and T-shirts can and should glitter this season.
