We had posted our video from the arrivals at the Cinema Against Aids gala from the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc at Antibes earlier, but this morning, hosts AmFAR, the Foundation for Aids Research has announced the total raised last night: a whopping, record-breaking US$35 million.
The money, raised through a live auction led by Sharon Stone, Harvey Weinstein and auctioneer Simon de Pury, an all-red fashion show curated by Carine Roitfeld (one of the chairs), and performances by Lana del Rey, Aloe Blacc (singing ‘The Man’), tenor Andrea Bocelli and Robin Thicke (performing ‘Blurred Lines’), will go to fight HIV and Aids and help find a cure.
Stone was the chair of the event, along with Weinstein and Roitfeld, former French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Milla Jovovich, Heidi Klum, John Travolta and Kelly Preston, Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan, Kenneth Cole, Bulgari Group CEO Jean-Christophe Babin, Milutin Gatsby, Michel Litvak, Vincent Roberti, Remo Ruffini, Worldview Entertainment chairman and CEO Christopher Woodrow, and Worldview COO Molly Conners.
As seen in our earlier video, guests included Kylie Minogue, Conchita Wurst, Jessica Chastain, Paris Hilton, Barbara Palvin, Justin Bieber, Alessandra Ambrosio, Adrian Grenier, Karlie Kloss, Bianca Balti, Jane Fonda, Natasha Poly, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Gael Garcia Bernal, Adrien Brody, Carole Bouquet, HRH Princess Clotilde of Venice and Piedmont, Jane Campion, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sofia Coppola, Marion Cotillard, Willem Dafoe, Rosario Dawson, Catherine Deneuve, Luke Evans, Kevin Robert Frost, Lewis Hamilton, Eva Herzigova, Jon Kortajarena, Karolína Kurková, Peter Lindbergh, Kellan Lutz, Thomas Mars, Margherita Missoni, Bar Refaeli, Nick Rhodes, Michelle Rodriguez, Vito Schnabel, Lara Stone, Riccardo Tisci, Chris Tucker, Paz Vega and Dita von Teese.
The auction highlight was Gone But Not Forgotten, a 3 m-high gilded woolly mammoth skeleton in a steel and glass vitrine by Damien Hirst, selling for US$15 million, the highest-grossing lot in AmFAR history.
Bruni-Sarkozy, presented a Bulgari Serpenti necklace, in white gold with a 13 ct of drop-shape aquamarine and 19·2 ct of pavé diamonds, which sold for US$550,000.
The Red Collection fashion show, with designs by, inter alia, Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang, Alexandre Terekhov, Altuzarra, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Cavalli, Chanel, Christian Dior, Christopher Kane, Comme des Garçons, Fendi, Gianvito Rossi, Giambattista Valli, Giorgio Armani, Givenchy, Gucci, Hugo Boss, J. Models appearing in the segment included Ambrosio, Huntington-Whiteley, Kurková and Kloss, and Dalianah Arekion, Ana Beatriz Barros, Nadja Bender, Maria Carla Boscono, Katharina Damm, Saskia de Brauw, Jourdan Dunn, Lida Fox, Charlotte Free, Toni Garrn, Veroniek Gielken, Izabel Goulart, Gigi Hadid, Jessica Hart, Chanel Iman, Jacquelyn Jablonski, Magda Laguinge, Maryna Linchuk, Angela Lindvall, Sasha Luss, Eniko Mihalik, Arizona Muse, Kati Nescher, Soo Joo Park, Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Irina Shayk, Natalie Siodmiak, Daria Strokous, Iris Stubegger, Lea Tisci, Anne Vyalitsyna, Liu Wen and Devon Windsor.
A seat on a Virgin Galactic flight to space with DiCaprio went for US$1 million.
Luxury jeweller Avakian noted that Travolta and Preston wore its designs, Preston with a white diamond necklace set with a total of 150 ct, and four stackable bracelets with a total of 80 ct, plus diamond earrings and ring; while Travolta had Avakian black gold cufflinks set with diamonds. As seen in the video earlier today, one of their friends proposed during the red carpet arrivals.
De Grisogono, meanwhile, notes that Stone, Huntington-Whiteley and Goulart wore its designs to the AmFAR Gala.
The annual event, the 21st held by AmFAR and produced by Andy Boose of AAB Productions, was sponsored by Worldview Entertainment, Bold Films, Bulgari, Mercedes-Benz, Moët Hennessy, and the Weinstein Company. Moncler presented the after-party.
