Deckers Brands’ Hoka has teamed up with the irreverent and imaginative designer Nicole McLaughlin (813,000 Instagram followers) for her take on the Mafate Three2 trail sneaker.
Newly released in October, the Mafate Three2 features a quick-lace system and a compression-moulded EVA midsole. The limited-edition version with McLaughlin adds a dirt- and water-resistant four-in-one gaiter system with hook and loop attachments, five utility pockets, co-branded labels, and a Velcro heel spike.
In addition, McLaughlin has shot the campaign imagery.
‘This partnership in particular brings together the technical properties of our newest trail shoe—the Mafate Three2—and marries it seamlessly with Nicole’s out-of-the-box design perspective. Working with Nicole has allowed Hoka to honour our roots on the trail with a design that speaks directly to what our future consumers are looking for,’ said Travis Wiseman, Hoka’s director of product for lifestyle footwear.
McLaughlin added, ‘My collaboration with Hoka allowed me to dive deep into multifunctional design, and the Mafate Three2 hybrid was the perfect canvas to create a modular gaiter attachment. I was fortunate to work closely with their design team, who helped bring my idea to life. It has multiple pockets, combining the Hoka brand’s performance æsthetic with my tongue-in-cheek design language.’
The Hoka × Nicole McLaughlin Mafate Three2 retails for US$250 at hoka.com and authorized Hoka dealers internationally.
