Boston, Mass.-based Bajer is a woman-owned watch brand founded by Leylâ Uysal. The watches themselves are Kurdish-inspired, Italian-designed, and Swiss-made.
Uysal grew up in Turkey in the 1990s, and was inspired by the determination of Kurdish women in preserving their culture and heritage.
The design inspiration is founded in the intricate rug weaving by Kurdish women. Three motifs are used in the watches: the Clarity, the Resistance, and the Protection. These are then mixed with European design sensibilities.
Bajer’s name is derived from the Kurdish word for city. The brand says it symbolizes ‘a state of mind, a place of freedom, safety and empowerment for the Kurdish community.’
A portion of the sales goes to NGOs supporting women and children in rural Turkey, to empower them through education, financial independence and community development, says the company.
The watches are available in the US, Canada, UK and EU. Find out more at www.thebajer.com.
