There are some holy grails in film that should not be remade. As we said in this magazine many years ago, Charade, with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant, was one. Not that that stopped Hollywood.
It’s Arthur’s turn to get the remake treatment, and early reviews Stateside have not been promising. Nevertheless, it had its London première last night, and perhaps we should reserve judgement till we’ve seen it ourselves.
Dudley Moore is no longer with us, so Russell Brand has stepped into his shoes for the new generation of moviegoers. Sir John Gielgud’s character has had a sex change and now takes the form of Dame Helen Mirren.
It’s not Dame Helen’s only remake of late: she took over from Bill Nighy in the American version of State of Play.
Both Brand and Dame Helen wore Dolce & Gabbana to the première at the O2 Arena.
Katy Perry was on the red carpet with her husband, though she didn’t last quite as long as it was Brand’s day to shine. Taylor Hackford, Dame Helen’s husband, was also present, as were Arthur co-stars Greta Gerwig and Geraldine James.
Noel Gallagher and Mark Ronson were there to support Brand.
