Day two saw the première of Timbuktu, in contention for a Palme d’Or at this year’s Festival de Cannes. The film deals with the Islamist occupation in northern Mali, with subject matter so sensitive it forced the director, Abderrahmane Sissako, to break down during the press conference. Actress Toulou Kiki had a similar reaction at the conference.
Sissako says, in the translation, ‘I cry in the place of those who experienced this real suffering. Real courage is those who lived these moments on a daily basis. They waged a silent combat.’
The story revolves around a family who lived in Timbuktu after it fell to jihadists. They feared death by stoning and lashings, and other crimes against humanity. Sissako’s tale tries to humanize the jihadists, too, to make them recognizable to all audiences.
Cameras caught former Miss France-turned-actress Sonia Rolland, actor Yassine Azzouz (both donning jewellery from Montblanc), Blake Lively (in Chanel), Inès de la Fressange, Julianne Moore, Liya Kebede and Zoe Saldana at events.
Lively had a lighter, more golden look for her second day at Cannes, using L’Oréal Paris’s gold and nude make-up. Kebede used the Cannes 2014 edition of L’Oréal Paris’s Volume Million Lashes, with the Color Infaillible in Brown Sensation and a rich raspberry lipstick; de la Fressange went with bronze and gold foundation and powder; and Moore used the Cannes Volume Million Lashes as well as the Age Perfect Cell Renew serum.
