With three years’ planning, the Royal New Zealand Ballet will release its production of The Sleeping Beauty in October.
The ballet features intricate choreography, distinctive costumes, and what the company describes as ‘spectacular’ sets. It is the RNZB’s grandest production to date.
Stella Abrera plays the lead role of Aurora.
Masks and props will be designed by Weta Workshops.
Much of the work over the three years was put together by former artistic director Gary Harris, and RNZB master and choreographer Greg Horsman. Harris’s successor, Ethan Stiefel, begins his role on September 1.
To complement the new production, designer Tamsin Cooper will release an exclusive merchandise collection.
The range reflects the soft, dream-like colours and lustrous fabrics that will be seen on stage and consists of items such as a vintage style velvet coin purse, a silk rosebud brooch, a velvet shoulder bag, hair ties and headbands, a beautiful shoe bag and a velvet eye mask. They are all constructed from Cooper’s signature velvets and pure silks. Each piece is embroidered with the RNZB’s Sleeping Beauty designs.
The range is only available in theatres and online at tamsincooper.co.nz and nzballet.org.nz.
