In 1937, Agatha Christie released one of her most famous and notably most glamorous detective novels.
Set within the confines of an art-déco boat with the infamous river Nile positioned as a stately backdrop, Christie, whose husband was an archæologist, combined her extensive knowledge of Egypt with a range of timeless, elegant and stylish characters still revered today.
It is this elegance that has acted as the inspiration behind the Sable & Minx spring–summer 2011–12 collection, aptly named Jewel of the Nile.
Says designer Thérèsa Brady of the novel’s relation to the collection, ‘The story was set in such exotic surroundings, at a very interesting and exciting time in history; it couldn’t help but stir me to create a collection I hope is reminiscent of the grace of the period.’
The collection reflects the beauty of that era’s fashion quite well. Sophisticated yet simple lightweight garments are made for taking a trip along the Nile. Where bamboo, cotton and modal offer breathability, providing the perfect lightweight cover-up, gauzy sheer silks and crepes hint at mystery, concealing and revealing pops of colours and detailing.
A rich colour palette of jewel tones, that would rival any pharaoh’s treasure chest, is featured throughout the collection with magenta, topaz, ruby, and amber all taking centre-stage while neutrals of sand, pumice and slate contrast in perfect balance.
Whilst all the pieces are stunningly reminiscent of the grace and class of days of old, standouts of the collection would have to be the array of dresses and tunics that comprise much of Jewel of the Nile. Each dress or tunic is easy to wear and features unique draping, pintucking, pleating or panel detailing to recall the stylized déco design lines. Pants and shorts are also cut to flatter any shape and will certainly become staples in your wardrobe come summer.
With the beauty and variety available in Sable & Minx’s Jewel of the Nile, summer dressing need no longer be a mystery.—Sopheak Seng, Fashion and Beauty Editor
