Videos: the Duchess of Cambridge is pregnant—the news analysed
The news of HRH the Duchess of Cambridge’s pregnancy means we have plenty of videos from our colleagues at ITN, on the announcement itself, on the rules of primogeniture (the baby will be third in line to the throne, regardless of gender), the obligatory comparison between the Duchess and Diana, Princess of Wales, and even a video on HM the Queen’s parenting. At the end is a video on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge discussing babies in an archive interview.
Sources are reporting that the Duchess has known of her pregnancy for a month, but that St James’s Palace had intended to hold off on the announcement till she had reached 12 weeks.
However, she was admitted to hospital yesterday with hyperemesis gravidarum or acute morning sickness, and the official announcement was brought forward. She will require supplementary fluids and nutrients.
The Queen and other members of the Royal Family were told immediately before the public.
Prince William was not with her at the time she was admitted but rushed back to join her in Berkshire, and travelled with her to King Edward VII Hospital in London.
The official announcement stated, ‘Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby.
‘The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry and members of both families are delighted with the news.
‘The Duchess was admitted this afternoon to King Edward VII Hospital in Central London with hyperemesis gravidarum. As the pregnancy is in its very early stages, Her Royal Highness is expected to stay in hospital for several days and will require a period of rest thereafter.’
There is already speculation on when the baby will arrive, and June or July 2013 are given as the most likely months. Ladbrokes is already taking bets on the baby’s name, with Elizabeth as the favourite for a girl (8/1), with Frances, John and Charles next (10/1).
