Fashion editor Sopheak Seng wasn’t the only Lucire staffer enjoying himself last Friday. Yours truly, along with editorial associate Victoria Jones, headed to Wellington Star Mercedes-Benz for the city unveiling of the SLS AMG gullwing sports car.
Wellington Star General Manager James Ridley took the covers off for Lucire especially, an hour before the general public arrived. While we weren’t the first in the world to see the car in the metal (the Swiss police managed to get some snapshots a few weeks before, for instance), we were among the few at Lucire’s home town who were.
Prior to the public arriving, Lucire took numerous snapshots of the SLS, and we managed to climb inside the vehicle to try it out for size. It does feel special and looks better in the metal—especially the matt silver paintwork. Retail price is NZ$450,000 for the “basic” model. However, we didn’t manage to sample this Merc for a test drive: it remains an unregistered model that will travel the country on show, before being sold as a brand-new car.
The SLS is one of nine that have been allotted for New Zealand sale this year.—Jack Yan
